In 2015, I began noticing farewell letters in New York storefront windows, messages from family-run shops closing after generations. Moved by these notes, I started photographing neighborhood institutions to capture their character before they disappeared. New York Neighborhood Storefronts is an ongoing series documenting mom-and-pop shops across New York City, places that feel rooted in their communities and carry the city’s history. Sharing this work has shown me how deeply people connect to these spaces, which is why I’m developing a photobook distilling over a decade of images. The project continues, though, there are still countless storefronts to discover and celebrate.
